*is too tired to put something here*
Okay so I just had this idea for a tattoo. It just popped into my head. I've wanted one forever and the only reason I haven't gotten one yet is that I didn't know what I wanted. I wanted it to be original and have some meaning so I don't get sick of it because you know it is going to be there forever. It would be all in black and sort of look like it was just outlined or someone drew it and just didn't color it in. It would be on my lower back maybe up to almost the middle of my back as it would have to be fairly large. There would be a tree in the middle being the focus and then I would have apples on the tree and on the ground each with something different inside it. The idea is that the tree would represent life and the apples would all have things in them that were significant but would be represented in a way that was enigmatic. Sort of like an avant garde journal or scrapbook or something. The things in the apples that had fallen off the tree would be sad or painful as the apples had gone bad and the ones on the tree would be happier. This is probably kind of hard to follow. Like as an example one could be luck which could go on the tree and be an apple with a 17 inside it because it's my lucky number. (When I was a kid I could not escape the number 17. It used to follow me around.) The cool part about it is that if someone just looked at it they wouldn't have a clue as to what it meant. Maybe I would have a girl sitting under the tree and different animals around that would represent the people around me. And I could have things carved into the tree like those hearts with initials in them. The other good thing? It would start out small and just get larger as I add things to it and I could add things whenever I felt like it. Which would also be good in case I get the urge to get another tattoo which I'm sure I will. I can just add to this one. Thoughts?

The biggest problem here is that I can't draw. Which is a problem. I can see it clearly in my head but I'm not sure how I'd be able to get it on paper. Maybe I can try to do it with photoshop or something. Actually you know it's kind of like The Giving Tree. And that's really similar to the image I have in my head. Like someone was just idly doodling on a piece of paper.

That's an awesome idea, I love the idea of being able to add stuff throughout your life, that is so cool, like a story of your life in symbols on your body. SO COOL. I can draw, I wish I could draw it for you, but I don't know if I'd do it the way it is in your head.

The more I think about it the more I like it. I like how you're all enthusiastic. I was doing the same thing as I was thinking it through like Oh! OH! that would be TOTALLY AWESOME. If you want to give it a shot go for it. I don't think the idea in my head is that specific. Just with the tree in the middle and grass along the bottom to bring it all together. So the apples (Which would have to be big to fit stuff inside them.) would fall onto the grass instead of just having them randomly along my lower back. Go for girly doodle and your all set.
rosiecatupanashad on August 1st, 2006 06:34 pm (UTC)
I don't know what girly doodle means? Like, you want it to look more cartoony then sort of gnarled and detailed? Like just an outline of a tree and no texture on the tree? Apple trees can be kind of gnarled and twisted in the way they grow, but it's not like you have to have it look like that. And what about the grass, would it be a straight line or kind of curve around to make a border for the whole tattoo? And I guess the apples would have to be sort of unrealistically big for the tree if you want to put stuff on them, but that's okay.

I was looking at tree sketches online. I like this: http://laurelines.typepad.com/photos/2006_trees/dsc05965.html although it's a little overly detailed, and I like these:
http://www.arts.ufl.edu/art/rt_Room/sketchbk/cutler/sketch_gallery2.html although none of them are quite right, but I like the way the guy uses line, it's very simple and nice.

Hee. This is what I meant by girly doodle. I guess I should have said curvy or something. More cartoony with a little detail but on the whole I want to keep it simple. I imagined the tree a lot like the one in the picture I posted. Just the outline with a few lines on the trunk. Especially if I'm going to put things on it like carvings in the tree because I want them to stand out. I also was going to use those kind of leaves but I realized that if I want to be able to add more apples later I'm going to have to leave large spaces in the tree blank. So I could do it sort of like this where I had a few random leaves near the apples I start out with but leave most of the space blank. I couldn't figure out how to describe different types of grass so I gave up and tried to draw it. (Yeah. I just drew a picture to show you how to draw one for me because I can't draw it.) I don't know if I like the grass lines or the kind that is like a loopy line. (Well it's supposed to be. Mine kind of looks like it should be on a heart monitor.) Maybe I could do it with short loopy lines and a few grass lines in between. I like that the apples would be big. It goes with the whole cartoony thing.

I like the little bursts of color on the first sketch.

I liked the picture you drew! It's good! Isn't the internet a hassle sometimes? Like, if we were sitting next to each other we could just brainstorm and be "like this?", "no, like this" But this way it is soooo hard. I'll try to draw something later, but I've never been good at cartoony stuff.

It took me four tries before I got to acceptable. And I had to practice how to draw an apple. I'm not even going to attempt to draw a girl or animals. (And after I drew it I thought it sort of had a 70's vibe going on. Or it might just be that it reminded me of Schoolhouse Rock.) I was thinking the same thing like "Why can't I just draw her some grass?!". Damn you technology barrier! That's cool if yours looks different cause I might end up liking what you do better but only draw it if you feel like it. I don't want you to feel like your obligated or anything.

I tried to draw something: http://pics.livejournal.com/upanashad/pic/0002r2d0/ The photograph is really bad, though, and it is so different from yours, plus my apples look like peaches, but whatever. I stuck all the leaves in because then you could keep adding to it with more leaves with branches sticking out of them, and more apples like I started to do on the left hand side. What do you think? Tell me honestly, I would keep changing it until you like it, I don't care if you think it sucks. And I just stuck that little girl in there for fun. And I know you may never actually use it as a tattoo, I just like drawing, so it's no biggie. But it's hard thinking of how something would work as a tattoo, I think I failed at that. Here's some other pictures, closer:

Meh. I suck at taking pictures.

Ooooooh I really like your tree too. There are too many options! I cannot choose! I like your idea making new branches (I hadn't even thought about using branches.) for the apples. That bird is the cutest but that little girl looks sinister holding an axe. Something about the look on her face makes me think she's like thisclose to going apeshit and chopping the hell out of the tree.

I don't care if you think it sucks.
I don't know why but that really cracked me up. I'm obsessive and a perfectionist so I'm sure I'm going to have quite a few versions before I get to what I really want. If you like to draw I would love to have your help coming up with different versions of things. I don't want you to feel like you've make a commitment or anything though so feel free to stop whenever you want. And I have absolutely no time frame on this.

If you do want to keep working on it some things I would change: I imagined the girl with long slightly wavy hair lounging under the tree or in the grass just sort of hanging out. I kind of want it to be more than just the tree so I thought of having animals off to the sides up in the air (Birds, butterflys, etc.) and some on the ground (Squirrels, bunnies, etc.). Also the grass would go off to the sides and the apples on the ground would be scattered around. Maybe add some flowers to the grass or something.

As far as it working as a tattoo I try to think about how it would look on my back as opposed to how it looks on the paper. I think the more detailed it is the harder it is to transfer it to tattoo form and keep it the same. Also you lose more detail the smaller you go. Which is why my first thoughts were fairly large and simple.

And this is really long so I'm going to shut up now. *is excited*

Butterflies not butterflys. I swear I can spell.

Hee. I'm not giving up, I'm going to do another picture, and try to make it simpler, with just one big tree shape like you drew. I'm just tired so maybe not today. Do you like things to look very happy and cheerful or a little bit sinister? I tend to go for the slightly sinister, which is why I couldn't help sticking that little girl in there, but I could try just cheerful and happy.
pandorapandora_17 on August 7th, 2006 09:40 pm (UTC)
My version would be happy and cheerful. I think you should do it the way you want to though. I like the idea of collaborating and having different interpretations. The whole thing has a very Alice in Wonderland trippy vibe to it so making it dark and sinister would be interesting.

Hi! I drew another picture, I think it's better and simpler and more happy, but I have to do another copy because I was figuring it out as I drew it, so I will show you soon. I tried to use your idea for the tree more. Hopefully I'll get it done tomorrow.

Okay, a hundred bazillion years later, is this more like what you had in mind: http://pics.livejournal.com/upanashad/gallery/00003q3p?page=4

(look at the last four pictures) Also, I've come to the conclusion that I suck at drawing cartoony things.
ora_waiora_wai on August 1st, 2006 09:51 am (UTC)
I like that idea, but be warned, people will constantly ask you if you are going to get it coloured in. I got a dragon done a few years ago (like 4, I am OLD) and I decided not to have it coloured in because (herein lies the sappy) it represented how I felt after that year and how the dragon was symoblic of me. Yeah.

I like symbolic tattoos.
pandorapandora_17 on August 1st, 2006 04:55 pm (UTC)
I'm not opposed to color. I just have weird rules regarding it. Like I have this thing where I would have to make sure whatever I'm wearing matches the colors in the tattoo when it's visible (I may have OCD.) and if I ever got another one the colors would have to look good with the first. Also I'm not sure how I feel about having color on a large amount of my body. (Especially since I'm very pale so it would really stand out.) Although I could see doing it all in one color instead of black. Or using different colors with the same idea. Have the apples in red outline the grass in green and so on.

Aww, I like that. How big is the dragon?
